Baroque Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, the former residence of the imperial family, is today the most visited tourist attraction in Austria. Around 5 million people come every year to see palace, gardens, zoo and other attractions of Schönbrunn.

The Habsburgs resided here the better part of the year in summer. Emperor Franz Joseph, who later married the enchanting Sisi and reigned from 1848 to 1916, was born here in 1830. The monarch spent his last years entirely in the palace. “Soon after the end of the monarchy the population of Vienna discovered the park as an attractive recreational area. Eventually the palace was also opened to the public, drawing around 1.5 million visitors annually. At the 20th session of the World Heritage Committee held in December1996 Schönbrunn Palace was put on the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites, an institution founded in 1972. Inclusion in this list confirms the importance of the palace and its gardens as a Baroque work of art”, so the official website of Schönbrunn
